A Ship’s Action

On the vast blue sea in the days of old,
The ships were wood and the men were bold.

They sailed all seven lengths and breadth,
Found adventure, treasure, and death.

As it is man’s legacy,
War soon followed on the mighty sea.

Weapons of iron were mounted on board,
Manned by a tough and hardy hoard.

With a belch of fire and thunderous roar,
Part of a ship would be no more.

Wood explodes and splinters would fly
Men would scream some would die.

From musket fire came black hailstones,
From a giant seemingly they were thrown.

From point blank range cannons pounded away,
Smoke obscuring the sun lit day.

Bodies mangled beyond repair,
Not a sight for the weak to bear.

Until colors are struck the battle will rage,
With death and destruction the going wage.

Unto the deep they commit the dead,
The reason why the deck oozed red.
