TO BE A WARRIOR
As quiet as his trailing shadow
moves the boy in the morning light,
Needing the element of surprise
to show his warrior’s might.
His desire to be a man drives
him on his quest,
To count a warrior’s coup
and pass his manhood test.
The pounding in his chest comes
from excitement tainted by his fears,
Will a warrior’s story he tell or
will his village shed their tears?
A rite of his people required
by Nature to pay,
Because survival of the fittest
is Nature’s only way.
