THE TERRIBLE JOURNEY

The white people got what they wanted
they took all of the Indians land,
Then they shipped many to a new place a place not yet wanted by any man.

They were herded like cattle and shipped likewise on a train,
They were made to walk hundreds of miles
through sleet and snow and the pouring rain.

Many didn’t make it
they couldn’t endure the elements and the daily pace,
The soldiers didn’t care
for to them it was just one less of an inferior race.

But many did make it and they thought no more would they have to roam,
They showed the land was worth having
then the worthlessness of the treaties they were shown.

The land called Oklahoma
was opened for settlement to the whites,
The Indian was pushed again
but this time without a fight.

But that was long ago
our people have adapted well,
Let’s live in peace with our white countrymen
but our story to our young we must surely tell.
