Little Sparrow's Match

Little Sparrow is over-joyed
his tenth summer has now arrived,
He’s closer to being a man
the goal for which he has strived.

He’s also attracted the attention
of the daughter of the mighty chief,
She follows him around like
a shadow causing him all kinds of grief.

All Little Sparrow wants
in life is to be a warrior true,
Not yet does he understand
what Princess Morning Star is trying to do.

She wants to sit and talk
she even tries to hold his hand,
The other boys make jokes and giggle how he wants to hide his head in the sand.

As the sun is beginning to set
Little Sparrow heads to the lake,
Bullfrogs with juicy legs
will be there for him to take.

His torch is burning brightly
as he pushes the canoe from the shore,
A warm summer night hunting bullfrogs a perfect night surely is in store.

Of course he does not know that in the village Morning Star did not stay,
She thought it would be so romantic
for the two of them to meet this way.

The little princess is so excited
she’s paddling as hard as she can,
To reach the romantic rendezvous
and see Little Sparrow, her man.

His canoe drifting with the current, Little Sparrow is happy and content,
Until the sudden crash when into the lake he went.

Little Sparrow was quite surprised until he saw the cause of his fall,
He let out a mighty scream and Princess Morning Star began to bawl.

He pulled himself into her canoe
ready to scream and shout,
But her tears had a strange effect confused the little warrior was without a doubt.

She stammers an apology to Little Sparrow It's just she was thinking of him,
And not looking where she was going
is the reason he went for a swim.

The poor innocent little warrior
he knew not what to do,
That his heart was in her hands
Little Sparrow had not one clue.

He takes her hand in his and says
"that it’s all right."
Then feels like he can hardly breathe
on this warm summer’s night.

Quickly he paddles to shore and escorts her to her lodge,
He’s a very changed little warrior, because Cupid’s arrow he could not dodge.
