Little Sparrow and the Brown Sea

White Cloud spoke with Soaring Dove about how into mischief their son does leap,
It seems the only time he’s innocent is when he’s fast asleep.

Little Sparrow is full of energy
so his moccasins trouble haunts,
He hears his father’s wise teachings
but can't resist when adventure taunts.

They talked about taking Little Sparrow
on a three-day hunting trip,
Yet, they knew how easy it would
be for this boy to give everyone the slip.

They decided he needs to go
to learn his people’s ways,
White Cloud will try his best
to see that out of trouble, he stays.

Little Sparrow is over-joyed
as he prepares for his hunting trip,
He’s got his bow and arrows
and even his knife upon his hip.

They’re going out on the plains
in search of a buffalo herd,
The boy warrior’s eyes are shining
as he hears the magic words.

Little Sparrow was so excited
he couldn't sleep at all that night,
His thoughts were so full of adventure he was wide awake when came the morning light.

All day the party traveled
until the sun hung low in the sky,
There they saw the sea of brown stretching as far as they could see with their eyes.

More buffalo than they could count such an awesome sight to behold,
They would camp until early morning then the adventure would unfold.

Little Sparrow was so tired
the next morning he could not rise,
Though his father tried his best
the boy couldn't open his sleepy eyes.

They left Little Sparrow asleep
and set out on their chore,
When the boy warrior woke
much confusion was in store.

From the ground came a rumbling
like thunder, that would not stop,
He ran to his little pony and
on his back he quickly did hop.

Little Sparrow was really scared
he knew not which way to go,
Until just over the hill the thundering herd began to show.

He urged his little pony to run
while looking back at the beasts,
He knew not where he was going
he really didn't care in the least.

With his eyes riveted backwards
Little Sparrow could not see,
His pony was headed straight for
a low hanging branch of a tree.

With a thud!! He hit the branch and
was left dangling above the brown sea,
Gasping to regain his breath
what a confused little boy was he.

The herd thundered below him
as his hands began to slip,
As one more crashed into the tree
 Little Sparrow lost his grip.

The scared boy didn't know it
but the thundering had stopped,
Then on the back of a buffalo calf
the little warrior heavily  "Kerr-plopped".

So startled was the calf
he took off at a run,
Little Sparrow quickly thought
I'll be glad when this adventure is done.

White Cloud came to his rescue
as he raced to the little calf’s side,
He plucked his son to safetythen tears of happiness the great warrior, cried.

What caused the great herd
to beat peace against its will,
It could only be
the light shining brightly from the hill.

All the hunters agreed
the Great Spirit had come to them,
In the vision of the Great White Buffalo, to save the little warrior on the limb.
