Little Sparrow's Feathered Quest
Little Sparrow watches the great eagle soaring high above the land,
He thinks to have some eagle feathers really would be so grand.
He takes off with determination to follow the eagle to its nest,
The little warrior doesn’t realize the dangers of this quest.
Little Sparrow finds the nest high upon a canyon wall,
He wonders how to reach it on this wall so tall.
He knows he can not climb to it for it reaches straight up to the sky,
He’s a little angry at the eagle for making his home so high.
He goes back to the village to think the problem through,
He knows he needs some help to figure out what to do.
He knows he can not just ask
that would give his plan away,
He has to be very careful
to his father what he does say.
He sat down next to his father and told him what he saw,
He said the eagle was so smart for building his nest so high on the canyon wall.
White Cloud agreed with his son
that no one could climb the rock wall,
The only way to reach the nest is
from the top of the wall so tall.
Of course Little Sparrow thought
I’ll climb down to the eagle’s nest,
The little warrior didn’t realize
that getting back up would be the test.
He gathered what he would need and
left before daylight,
Going on an eagle raid, he would
show his warrior’s might.
He tied his rope to a tree then waits
for the eagle to take flight,
He lowers himself over the edge
as his heart starts to pound from fright.
Quickly he realizes how far it is
to the ground below,
It’s getting harder to breathe
as farther from the top he does go.
He’s almost frozen with fear
as he slides down inch by inch,
The little warrior realizes for sure he’s gotten himself in a pinch.
He’s almost to the point of tears
when his feet touch the nest,
Even though Little Sparrow’s strength is gone, he can not stop to rest.
He knows he must not be here
when the eagle comes back home,
He prays to the Great Spirit
to send the eagle a long way to roam.
He gathers up all the loose feathers and ties them with a strip of rawhide,
Then asks the Great Spirit to help him climb up the mountainside.
For he realized with a wave of panic, that climbing up was harder than down,
And now the little warrior was trapped a long way from the ground.
The Great Spirit was watching once more and help was on the way,
When Little Sparrow was absent this morning
White Cloud knew he must not delay.
He reached Little Sparrow just in time
as the eagle was heading home,
White Cloud asked the Great Spirit this question, "How can he cure his son of the urge to roam?"
