LITTLE SPARROW’S FIRST CANOE TRIP

With a gleam in his eyes
Little Sparrow stares across the lake,
Eyes riveted on the island as
his plans he begins to make.

I’ll need my bow and arrows
and my knife for sure,
And also plenty of food
and water so pure.

I better take a doeskin
or maybe two,
It might turn cold before
my trip is through.

He gathered his supplies
when no one was around,
Because on this trip
his Mother and Father would frown.

Little Sparrow wonders
why they worry about him so,
Don’t they understand
a warrior has places to go?

Early next morning
he slips quietly out,
A great adventure he’s going to have
he has not one doubt.

Little Sparrow has the canoe
quickly on its way,
He’ll be far from shore
before the night becomes day.

Half way to the island
he hears the lightning go BOOM!
When the rain starts to fall
his heart is filled with gloom.

With the rain pouring down
the wind roaring in his ear,
With white caps pounding
Little Sparrow begins to fear.

His canoe rocks to and fro
filling with water fast,
Help from the Great Spirit
quickly he asks.

His little body is tired
he desperately needs some rest,
Little Sparrow knows not
whether he can pass this great test.

Now he understands
his Mother and Father’s concern,
He can see there’s much
this little warrior must learn.

Driven by the wind
his craft is beached,
He is filled with gladness
land has been reached.

He crawls upon the shore
as the storm passes on,
His longing for adventure
this day is all gone.

He sees not White Cloud
his Father so brave,
With tears in his eyes
because his son has been saved.

The storm turned him around
and took him back home,
The Great Spirit said
"this is enough for one day to roam."
