 A Charge to Parents
My mom and dad
if you love me so,
Then please teach me
everything I need to know.
The difference between right and wrong
I must understand,
So I can live my life
as society demands.
Please teach me how to
take care of myself,
So I won’t have to always rely
on someone else.
Teach me how to love and
all things to respect.
So my feeling will be known
there will be nothing to suspect.
Teach me to be humble
to accept victory with grace,
To be honorable in defeat
so I’ll never lose face.
Tell me I must be honest
in all that I do,
To bring my family honor and
have peace in my heart, too.
Teach me to have kindness
and patience with all,
So in the eyes of man and in my own heart
I’ll stand tall.
Teach me to make do with what life
throws my way,
So I’ll always be able to
face another day.
As parents of a child
you are charged with this request,
All I can ask is
please do your best.
